15 Things You Should Think before You Star a Blog

1. Know Your Niche

First and foremost what you need to know is who you are writing for.

Take some time and think of your targeted readers now. This is very important.

Who are your targeted readers?

Imagine people you are writing for.

You write a blog because you would like to share your interests and joys with ‘them’.

You are going to provide some useful information or solutions for ‘them’ or to offer some useful products to ‘them’.

Take your time and explore your thoughts…

Now you know your targeted readers.

This is called a niche search.

“YOUR NICHE is your targeted readers.”

2. Know Profitable Blog Industries Out There

Whether you are going to monetize your blog or are creating a blog purely for your fun outlet, it is not harmful to know what kinds of industries are out there and whether they are profitable or not.

The following three industries are considered profitable:

  1. Wealth and Money (How to make money)
  2. Relationship and Dating
  3. Health and Fitness

The following next two industries are mentioned as profitable:

     4. Self Improvement

     5. Hobbies and Activities

Almost profitable blog ideas belong to one or two of these 5 industries.

There are possibilities that you can switch your hobby or interest-based blog into a profitable blog sooner or later.

3. Identify Your Niche in a Market

You have an idea to which industry your niche idea belongs now.

OK.

Now, let’s make your niche more specific.

Here is an example:

If your niche idea belongs to the Health and Fitness industry, narrow your niche down as:

1. Health and Fitness (Industry to which your niche idea belong to)

Break down the industry into some market or categories. I have made three examples like:

  • Weight loss
  • Bodybuilding
  • Diabetes

Identify which market or category your niche idea belongs to like from the above.

2. You can make your niche more specific as:

  • Weight loss for women aged 40’s to get confidence back and be more attractive
  • Bodybuilding for skinny young men to be attractive physically
  • Diabetes recipes for women aged 50’s to get her husbands’ health back

I followed the formula below and that makes me easy to niche down the idea.

Formula: Industry >> Market >> People >> Reason

Make your niche more specific with the formula below as:

  • Fitness >> Weight loss >> woman aged 40’s >> get back confidence
  • Fitness >> Bodybuilding >> skinny young men >> physical attractiveness
  • Health >> Diabetes >> women 50’s >> to get her husbands’ health back

4. Narrow Down Your Niche

Why do you need to narrow down your niche?

The more you can “niche down”, the more your niche becomes specific and more targeted. Hence the chances are that your blog gets successful.

Why is this?

This is because of how much effort you are going to make, you cannot satisfy and make everyone happy. Hence, the possibility of success is unlikely.

For example, if you focus on age, gender or types of people on travelling, it is highly likely that you are going to make the targeted people happy and can satisfy them.

Narrow down your niche and that increases the values you can provide.

I am going to be more specific.

If you are targeting a female solo traveller, you could provide information on how to have a safe travelling as a single or how to find travel mates and save money for accommodation, for example.

However, such information is not helpful to family travellers. You cannot make family travellers happy.

Another example could be like this. You are professional, experienced in your field for more than 25 years and you are aged 50’s, you are looking for a better job opportunity now.

Would you like to get a job search advice from someone early 20’s student, not knowing anything about your field and inexperienced?

Probably not.

If he is providing to other students how to get rid of student loans by blogging, that would work.

It would be much better if the person has the same experience with yours or the same concerns or interests. That appeals a lot to the readers. They can connect to you.

Narrow down your niche and be specific your targeted readers are important.

The more your idea is focused and targeted, your niche becomes specific, meaning your blog becomes valuable to specific people and less competitive. The chances are that you are highly likely going to be successful.

Targeting and focus are important for blogging

5. To Follow Passion or Money?

Once you have decided to start a blog, you can ask yourself and be honest with yourself:

Would you like to earn money out of blogging or simply make your blog as a creative outlet?

Many bloggers are talking about this topic. But then do we have to choose either money or hobby for blogging?

Why not both?

If what I am doing is fun and creative, then if people are willing to pay money for it, that will be really great. In the same way, if you have an idea of how to monetize what you create, that is going to be really wonderful.

On the other hand, can you really spend your precious time, money and efforts on what you are not interested or not passionate about?

Can you write articles for what you are not interested and for years?

Mark Zuckerberg, a founder and CEO of Facebook, did not start Facebook with a thought bringing billions of people around the world and makes it profitable.

When Facebook started, it was meant only for Harvard University students, a specific narrow niche, who had a reason to connect to each other, to collect information for their exams.

The best is to blog what you love the most, what you are interested in or what you are passionate about. Then make your blog profitable.

6. Your Niche is Profitable or Not?

How can you know your niche is profitable or not?

No one can give you a definite answer about whether you can earn money with your niche. And yet, you can figure out the possibility.

Google Advert

Go to Google search, write down your niche or relevant keywords. Click search.

Are there any companies which are paying money for adverts? You can check at the top of a search result. If there is an advert, the niche is highly likely profitable as there are companies paying for the adverts.

I show you the examples of adverts appeared on Google search. I just typed flight booking, there are 4 paid articles listed on the top of the search result as:

Product for Sale

Does your niche have products for sale?

You can find the products of your nice at:

  • Amazon
  • Clickbank
  • Rakuten
  • eBay

When you find Amazon, look at the left column or go to a category tab. Find your niche and click it. Is there any product for sale?

Check the reviews for the products. Are people buying them? How about the reviews?

Forums

You can learn much from the forums of your niche.

What are the problems your potential readers have, what are their desires and wishes, what kind of products are they looking for?

Go to Google and type:

  • forum: (your niche). Then search.

You will find forums in your niche.

7. Know What You Can Deliver

You have done some research, found that people are buying products, and companies paying money for adverts in your niche.

Learn what kinds of desires they have.

Know what kind of problems, worries and pains they have.

Then think about what kind of solutions or products you can deliver to make a betterment in their lives. Money is there.

Making money is as a result of serving and helping your readers.

8. Do you have to be a professional to start a blog?

If you are planning to provide certain medical products, you probably need a specific licence. If you are giving specific financial advice which would bring a possibility of huge gain or loss, you need a certain educational or professional backgrounds.

Sure, such kind of things can easily imagine as a general thought, but other than that, there is no reason you have to be professional to start a blog.

If you have experience in your niche or your niche is your job or educational background, your writing becomes more convincing. People can relate to what you are writing.

The importance is, to be yourself and to be honest to your readers.

Your readers are not ignorant. They are spending their own precious time to find answers or real solutions they are looking for. They could be much knowledgeable than you.

As far as you are honest to yourself and to your readers, you have nothing to hide or pretend. Your writing gets genuine and becomes appealing to your readers.

Social Media and Pinterest

You do not need to be a professional to write a blog but you become an expert in your field.

In the beginning, you might not know anything about web design. I had no idea how to create a blog when I started.

When you do not know about something, you do research, read books or ask people around for the answer.

By learning and constantly learning, which comes naturally, you become an expert in your field.

Learning becomes your mental habit. You gain knowledge out of your constant learning. The knowledge becomes yours. It will never disappear, and no one can steal it from you.

What you need to gain by blogging is ‘TRUST’ from your readers.

9. Listen to Your Gut Feelings and Trust Your Instinct

You can decide to ‘GO!’ or not.

How can you listen to your gut instinct and follow it?

Get all the information you collected, ask yourself and write down your answers.

Incubate all the information and the answers. Then make quietening your mind.

Sooner or later, you will get an answer. Sometimes your heart knows more than your mind or intellect if you cannot decide.

But then if you make a mistake or fail?

No worries, what you can lose? Nothing!

Blogging takes a little amount of money and can use spare time for writing.
