1. Crusie Cabins located forward of the lower decks
The best place to be on a cruise ship is the forward of the ship. All the forward staterooms are suites. But the forward lower deck should be avoided.
When the ship is docked at a port, the anchors are released. The ship usually arrives at a port early morning, and the anchors make a lot of noise. Avoid cabins located forward on lower decks. The ship’s anchors and other mechanical equipment are stored there.
Cabins located in the forward on the lower decks also make the motion. That is the ship’s bow, directly receiving the strong resistance from the wave crashing. You can feel this physically with sound and vibration. Staying in the forward cabins makes you aware that you are finally on board!
The cruise ship staterooms located in the front of the lower decks create a lot of motion. The best deck on the cruise ship for motion sickness is the lower deck.
But there is one thing to remind you. If you have motion sickness, the best cabins are located on the lower decks. It’s the best deck on a cruise ship to avoid seasickness but not in the front.
The lower midship cabins are the best for motion sickness.
When I joined a ship as a cruise staff at the first time, our team’s cabins are assigned in the front lower deck!
Luckily, the motion of the ship does not bother me at all. After having a fun day, I never had a sleepless night. I was also all day outside my cruise ship cabin and only staying in for sleep and shower. My super earplugs from Britain also protected me from a noise disturbance.
And yet, if I get on the ship as a passenger and with my love, it is different. I would not take the cabin unless it is necessary. The sound created by waves crashing is not romantic.
Keep finding the best place to stay on a cruise ship!
abins close to the cruise ship engine room
The best and worst cruise ship cabins are located near the bridge. The captain and the engineer officers control the engine there.
The cruise ship engine room creates a lot of noise and vibration. Imagine if your cruise ship stateroom is close to the engine room, you receive a constant disturbance. Of course, the cabins nearby are protected with soundproof, and yet still you can book a cabin at other locations.
How can you know the location of the engine room
You can check out the inside cruise sips with the cruise ship deck plans of your ship and find its location. Go to your cruise line’s website and find your ship. You can easily find the cruise ship deck plans.
The cruise ship engine rooms are usually situated in the aft lower deck. Cruise ship reviews do not talk much about the engine rooms, but the area should be avoided. Instead find out the best cabin location on a cruise ship.
Avoid lower deck aft cabins nearby the cruise ship engine rooms if you are sensitive to noise.
3. Under the Lido deck cabins
Open pools and buffet restaurants are usually located on the upper deck of the ship. It is called the Lido deck. Cabins located just under the Lido deck are one of the best rooms on a cruise ship but will receive noise.
On the Lido deck, beach chairs are situated by the crews around an open pool early in the morning. Then they are cleared away before the evening. Dance parties and deck parties are going on day and night. Thousands of people are in and out at the buffet restaurants.
Of course, open pools and extravagant parties are all scheduled and arranged for the cruisers. They can then enjoy the cruise culture maximal. It is the place where you experience all the feels and aliveness of cruising.
If you are a kind of person who enjoys such a feel of cruise’s openness, stay close to the activity deck such as the Lido deck. You will have a fun time!
If you are sensitive to noise, the upper deck cabins are the expensive cabins, you are not going to pay for the noise coming from the Lido deck parties.
4. Cabins on top or under the activity decks
If you are sensitive to noise, the cabins located nearby the following places would be better to avoid if that is possible.
- Pools and buffet restaurant decks
- Disco and nightclub
5. Right above a smoking area
Check out the smoking area. It depends on the ship but normally there are on the Promenade deck. If the cabins are located the lower deck just above the smoking area, smoke will come up. For non-smokers, it would be

Passengers access to the elevators and the staircases. If you are a light sleeper, noise from the communal area would bother you. On a formal or gala night especially, the elevator areas get busy.

A good thing is that the cabins near the elevators and the staircases are convenient. You can access to restaurants, theatre and disembarkation decks.
7. Cabins smaller than 150 sq feet
Cruise ship cabins cannot have a usual hotel room size. Make sure that you are comfortable with the size of your cabin, especially when having a long cruise. The size of the standard cabin starts from 180 sq feet.
Inside cabins are the cheapest in the ship but the smallest in size. If the size goes down under 150 sq feet, it is critical, especially more than 5 days longer cruises. Imagine it is normally interior stateroom. There is no window. It makes you feel confining.
8. Cabins with blocked views
For the first time cruisers, you thought of booking a cruise with a Balcony cabin but found that an Oceanview cabin is cheaper. The Oceanview cabins have a window or a porthole where the light is coming, and you can have an outside view.
An obstructed view cabin category might cost less. When you find the cheap Oceanview cabins, make sure that it is not located in front of lifeboats or other obstacles. There is no point that you pay extra money for the light and view, but the lifeboats are preventing a beautiful sea view and become an obstacle for it.
I have heard that the first-time cruisers make the mistake of having a blocked view cabin.
9. Cabins near a white space
In the cruise ship deck plans, there are white spaces. If you are sensitive to noise, it would be better to avoid the cabins nearby the white space. These spaces are designed usually for:
- Housekeeping storerooms
- Staff only area to access or their elevators
- Public laundry rooms
- Public ice machine rooms

10. Guaranteed cabins
What are guaranteed cabins?
Guaranteed cabins are something that you are guaranteed to have a place on the ship. The thing is that you do not know your cabin’s location until you actually get on board.
You pick a minimum cabin level or type of the cabins, such as guaranteed cabin with a balcony. The cruise line assigns you a cabin based on availability just a day or two days before the ship sets sail.
I am not saying that guaranteed cabins are not worth the risk. Would you like to assurance that you will not have a noisy cabin or a view blocked cabin? Then it is not worth to spend your time to look for guaranteed cabins.
As I have already discussed, guaranteed cabins could be located above the theatre, next to a crew entrance door or above the ship’s anchor. These places where people usually do not book.
For the lower price oceanview cabins, the window or a porthole might be blocked by the lifeboats.
Other examples could be that cabins below the deck where people have jogging early morning. Above the theatre and next to the elevator are common examples.
You could have a budget and are looking for many discounts for saving. Or you can be flexible about any particular issues around the accommodation. Then a guaranteed cabin can be a good choice!
Your priority is saving and are just looking for a cheap cruise deal. You also know you won’t be spending much time in your cabin. Then the guaranteed cabins are probably worth looking at.
These types of cabins have a big discount and attract much attention from people who are looking for a cheap cruise. But usually, the cabins actually offered are those which people do not book.
